Writing Tip #58: Read Books On Writing

Okay, this tip is a no-brainer. But I share it because some tips are obvious yet they’re still not observed. I have a couple of hundred books on writing including the one above.

In fact, I have an extra copy of Ernest Hemingway On Writing.

Want to win one?
Wait, a contest that DOESN’T involve a Travis Thrasher book? I’m in!

Simply reply to this post by sharing what kind of writing you do and I’ll pick a random winner at the end of the week. Thanks.

  1. I write contemporary and literary fiction. (And quite a bit of nonsense, too.)

P.S. Congrats on expecting twins! That's such happy news. 🙂

  2. Young adult, well, because i am one

  3. I write mostly short fiction and a little poetry. I like blogging. Will be starting on my first novel this year. I don't really know what genre most of my writing would be tagged with.

  4. Fiction…religiously realistic…not sure that is really a genre, but I just made it up so I think it should count 🙂

  5. At this point, mostly grad school research papers. But I enjoy writing fiction, and am beginning to dabble in screenplays. I'm still young and unsure of my direction.

  6. I just read books about writing and never get around to writing. Occasionally, I write screenplays.

  7. To be honest, I call myself a blogger. And if we're being completely honest, I'm a pretty good blogger.

I found writing 8 months ago as a vice to fill a huge void in my life. I was working through a lot of personal circumstances and the only way I could make sense of my life was to write.

I began writing. I began sharing. First, via email. I sent my writing to my family and a few friends.

And little by little, what I wrote kept finding its way online and a blog was born.

Now here I am, less than a year later, and I have no clue where I'm headed with this writing thing. I love it. It's the first hobby I can't stop. I see the world through words. And somewhere on this crazy short journey, my readers are telling me to start writing a book.

And yet I have no clue where to start or even understand my own voice.

But I'm reading books like these to hone the craft, and someday, I'm going to walk into a B&N, grab my coffee, and glance around to see people reading my book.

It'll be hard not to cry when this happens. But it will. But for now, I'll keep chasing that dream.

    Sorry for the long comment!

  8. Hi! I am working on a lovely fictional book right now. It's one year in the making and I am really deep into discovering the characters! I also write a lot of copy for clients who need press releases and web copy.

  9. Thanks everybody for your posts. Good to see the variety of writing! My encouragement (as I always say to everybody) is to keep at it.

The random number generator on my phone picked #12, so that's C.J. Congrats! Let me know your address and I'll get that book sent out to you.

    Take care everybody!
