The First Draft

Finishing a first draft is like completing 200 miles on the Daytona 500.

It’s like reaching camp two on the climb to Mt. Everest.
It’s like completing all the initial flat stages in the Tour De France.
It’s like getting your ticket to March Madness.
It’s getting into the playoffs. Sometimes, however, you arrive limping and wounded and completely exhausted.
Finishing a first draft of any book should be cause for celebration. But anybody who has been there knows that there’s still a long road ahead.
Nevertheless, today, after five months and one day, after 92,076 words, I completed another first draft.
Nothing more can be said about it for now. I’m pleased to be standing where I am. But I know there’s lots more work ahead. The journey for this story has just begun.
I’m excited to see where it will end.

  1. I love that "The End" moment. Even when there's another beginning before another the end.
