The work in progress

Time is definitely an author’s friend. I’m realizing this more and more with each novel I work on. Take for instance my current work-in-progress.

At the core I’m wanting to tell a story about a broken woman. The opening scene puts us right in the middle of her story–and really, in a sense, she’s hit rock bottom. She ends up as a woman on the run. The story is about her journey.
The more I’ve gotten to know about her, the more the story has evolved. There are reasons behind why she’s made these choices. There are explanations behind why she’s so haunted. There are legitimate causes for her to run.
I’m well into this story, but I continue to peel layers away to find the true story I’m wanting to tell. This time it really surprised me. I know I’ll have to go to some uncomfortable areas. The journey isn’t going to be easy. But my hope is that it will make this current story special. Of course, that’s what I’m always hoping. But it’s been nice to be able to have a little more time to flesh out a story and its characters.
I’ve been discovering the layers and trying to figure out how to tie them all together along with making the story exciting. Not the easiest thing. It does take a lot of time thinking all these things through. Time is an author’s friend. I’m hoping that I use it wisely.
